Riders set out on the road to Moretonhampstead.

150 riders finish the 2001 Dartmoor Devil.

This years Dartmoor Devil saw a complete contrast to 2000. With hardly a breath of wind 161 riders set out on a grey misty morning from Bovey Tracey.
The delayed Autumn weather meant few leaves had fallen, so the lanes were not treacherous as is common for this time of year. Most riders arrived back with plenty of time to spare at the finish at the Kestor Inn, Manaton.
Afternoon sunshine added the finishing touch to what ended up being a pleasant ride across Dartmoor. 151 riders completed this years event, 65 of them for the first time.

Farewell to the Big Tree!
Torbay CTC's last visit to the "Big Tree" - the 2000 Boundary Ride.

The "Big Tree" near Goodrington in Paignton has gone. The tree was a significant landmark in itself and in the history of the local section. Torbay CTC used this as the main meeting place for many years throughout the 1950's before moving to five lanes at Marldon, and eventually to todays meeting point at Kingskerswell.

New Dartmoor map for off-road cyclists is produced.

Dartmoor National Park Authority have produced a new map detailing off-road rides available.
The map grades the rides from easy to severe, and the routes have been developed with help of CTC members and members of A.C.C.O.R.D. who have been working with the authority since the introduction of a Bylaw which effectively bans cyclists from large areas of the moor.

The map is available from 4th October from the DNPA

and is priced at £7.00 plus postage and packing.

YHA to close Plymouth Youth Hostel - Belmont House.
Belmont House - Plymouth Youth Hostel
YHA - Belmont House

The Youth Hostels Association are reported to be selling off the Hostel in Plymouth.
Beaumont House - a fine example of a large Georgian House - forms a vital link in the chain of South West hostels, and for those travelling from Devon into Cornwall under their own steam, this will make a huge gap in the network.
No details are yet available of any future proposals for YHA in Plymouth but CTC are asking for clarification f the position and more details will be published when they are known.

Cycling in the South Hams
1: Riding through Ermington.
2: Riding through Newton Ferrers.

South Hams Audax rides are a success.

September 10th saw two Audax rides starting at Ivybridge Leisure centre.
52 riders took part in the South Hams Audax, and the Devon Ivy Doodle. The rides were blessed with glorious weather.
The routes made use of the extensive network of lanes around the South Hams, and the Plym Valley cycleway, and took in some of the county's finest scenery, with the first tinges of autumn colour.
