Haldon Forest Park - gearing up for
it's grand opening in April.

Haldon Forest Park getting ready for grand opening.

From leisurely routes through forest glades to trail-blazing, single-track runs down steep wooded valleys, it's time to get on your bike and enjoy the new cycling routes at Haldon Forest Park.
A major grant from Sport England has enabled the Forestry Commission to turn the 3500-acres forest on a high ridge on the outskirts of Exeter into a pioneering outdoor activity centre for all ages to enjoy. The newly built trail infrastructure provides over 20 miles of safe, off-road access for cyclists, walkers and horse riders.
The Family Cycling Trail is the least challenging route which follows a line around the contours on the top of the ridge, across into Tower Wood, along to the Bird of Prey viewpoint and on to Haldon Gateway to complete the circle.
The Adventure Cycling Trail is a second loop that takes you on a more rugged surface from the Gateway down into the forest a little before heading along the side of the ridge to a crossing point, where riders can opt to circle back to the start or continue into a new clear fell area known as Spicers Wood and do a further loop of that area. Both of these trails can be joined together to make one large route.
Haldon Forest Park officially opens on April 15, but most of the trails are already in use. The park is open during daylight hours and entry is free. For more information,

The bridleway from Ridge Road to Haccombe,
almost blocked by tons of rubbish.

Fly-tippers ruin some of Devons finest tracks.

A mountainbike training ride was interrupted recently when the riders had to negotiate tons of rubbish, including fridge freezers, TV sets, car tyres and cupboards, strewn along a popular bridleway near Haccombe.
The rubbish extended about 150yards along the track, and the adjacent hedges were littered with car tyres and batteries.
This is a severe case of what appears to be a fairly common problem across the county.

Shock and sadness at death of Welsh club riders.

No-one could fail to be shocked by the terrible tragedy in North Wales on the 8th January, when a car sliding on ice ploughed in to a group from Rhyll Cycling Club.
Four riders died including a 14 year old boy and the clubs chairman.
Returning from club rides on that Sunday I know many members will feel horror at what has happened, and feel a great sympathy for all the familes and friends involved in the North Wales area.

JAN 2006 All change at the local Cycle Shops:

There have been major changes at three of the local cycle shops in South Devon and Exeter recently.
In Torquay, Colin Lewis finally retired from running the shop, to busy himself cycle coaching and running tours to Majorca.
Simon Aske continues to run and manage the shop under the Colin Lewis name.
Simon Northway who ran Fairlight Cycel Engineering from his garage at home, has taken over the old Mylor Cycles in Teignmouth, and Richards Bikes in Exeter has moved from Heavitree to a new home near Polsoe Bridge, and eldest son Christopher is now mechanic in the new shop.
Good luck to all three establishments.

DARTMOOR BIKE BUS IS A SUCCESS.

The Bike Bus services set up by Dartmoor National park Authority have been proved to be a success this year.
The service carried carried 100 passengers over the 12 weeks (averaging 8 per sunday). This is an occupancy of 35% which for a first year pilot is very acceptable - and in comparison with services operating in other areas of the country is excellent.

It is hoped to run services again from April 2006, - cycling groups are now being consulted as to which routes and when to run them.

70 attend DA Dinner at Chudleigh.

Members & friends of Devon DA enjoyed a good evening at the Old Coaching House Inn in Chudleigh on 3rd December. The evening comprised a carvery, a disco and the prize presentation. Noteable awards were to Linda Johsnton for her work as DA Secretary, and to Ben Brodie who received his "Cape Wrath Challenge" certificate.
Richrad Younger-Ross MP addressed the guests, and stressed how important it was for the club to be a pressure group for the Bovey - Moreton cycle route recently rejected by the planning authorities.
He also wished the club well at it's 75th anniversary, which will take place at Starcross in April 2006, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Brunels Atmospheric Railway located in the village.

Officers reject Moreton-Bovey cycle route application.

There is great dissapointment by local cycling groups, with the news that planning proposal for the Bovey - Moreton cycle route has been rejected:

At its meeting on 2 December 2005, the Development Control Committee of Dartmoor National Park Authority considered an application by Devon County Council for the establishment of a cycle and footway, sometimes referred to as a community path, from Lustleigh to Moretonhampstead, roughly following the line of the former railway through the Wray Valley. This was a highly controversial proposal which had, to some extent, polarised opinions, with strong support from the Moretonhampstead direction and opposition from the Lustleigh direction. After an hour-long debate, during which there were many expressions of support for the proposal, it was concluded that there were too many matters of detail still unresolved and, on a vote of 14 to 6, it was decided to refuse permission. Although three reasons for refusal were agreed by the Committee, none relates to the principle of a cycle and footway through the Wray Valley and it was made very clear that the County Council should be encouraged to carry out further work on the details of the proposal, including the alignment of some parts of the route, so that an amended proposal can be submitted in due course.

Sad news that Gordon passed away on Monday 7th November. Gordon had been ill for a long time and was in the rest home in Barnfield Road, Exeter, after suffering a stroke some time ago.
He outsurvived his wife Ivy who passed away earlier this year.
Gordon and Ivy had been the mainstays of the Devon DA for many years, and with the passing of both, it effectively ends a long chapter in the history of the club.

Biggest ever DARTMOOR DEVIL bike ride.

The 2005 Dartmoor Devil ride exceeded most expectations. With over 260 entries, many had to be sent back. On the day 165 set out in pouring rain. By mid morning the sun was out, but the wind got going and made it a hrd push over the moor to Princetown.
142 riders made it to the finish at Manaton, a great result considering the weather and the difficulty of the route.

West Devon ( Tavistock) section wound up.

Devon DA's newest section "West Devon" has been formally wound up. Formed in July 2001, the section was headed by Linda Johnston & Mike Hunting who worked hard keeping the small section going. The small group of members have been prolific at Audax events, which has been the staple diet of the section. Linda took on the role as DA secretary which she has carried out extremely well during her three years in office.
The riders from West Devon remain as CTC members, by the Tavistock Audax events will no longer be organised under the CTC banner.

Brenda Kerry

Brenda Kerry has been killed.

We have just received the terrible news the Brenda Kerry of Exeter Section was killed when she was involved in a collision
with a tractor and trailer on the A377 Crediton Road on Thursday 20th October. Apparently the tractor was overtaking her on
double lines and pulled in when it met oncomimg traffic.
She died yesterday in hospital.
Brenda was a keen member of the Exeter A Section CTC, for about the last 5 years, and was close to her home
at Newton St Cyres when this happened.and is a sad loss to our DA.
The club wishes to extend it sympathy to all of her family and friends.

This is now the third fatality to an Exeter rider in 9 years, the last being Norman Wells who was struck by a lorry last year.

Roger Floyd.

Roger sprawls to victory!

South Hams CTC section organised the DA Freewheel and Uphill event on 2nd October.
18 riders entered the event with over 25 riding out to the start.
It was a fast descent down the hill towards Gara Bridge, with ridres having to brake hard at the finish before the bend at the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately Roger Floyd from Plymouth ended up in the ditch on the bend, however his subsequent performance on the climb back up the hill was sufficient for him to win the event.
Afterwards many of the riders had lunch at a pub in nearby Halwell.

Fourteen from Torbay enjoyed a great weekend in France at the end of September.
The ferry crossing was Poole to Cherbourg, with the riders alighting at 06.30 on Saturday morning. This gave a full day to enable the riders to complete an 80 miles circuit around Cotentin, taking in St.Mere Eglise with a visit to the war museum, and on to the coast to visit the normany beach at Utah. On Saturday night they stayed at the Youth Hostel in Cherbourg, and on Sunday after watching the start of a massive Citroen 2CV rally leaving the hostel, they rode another 70 miles before boarding the Barfleur back to Poole.

Flashing Smart light.

Smarter Law?

Legalised flashing!

Soon it will be legal to use flashing LED lamps on a bicycle. Although many already do, and indeed there is a view that these lights offer a higher visibility, but the law at the moment does not allow their use.
Following sustained campaigning by CTC, the UK's national cyclists' organisation, and just in time for when the clocks go back this year, it should at last become legal to use flashing lights on your bike
The Minister of State, Dr Stephen Ladyman, this week signed the order; and provided there are no parliamentary objections before then, it should become law in October.

Heavy rain on the Saturday cleared in time for the South Hams Auax 100Km ride and the Grunters 150 from South Brent organised by Mike Allen and the South Hams CTC.
It was a low turnout, particularly for the 100Km event with only 11 riding, and e few more taking on the challenging "Grunters" ride which took them to the Warren House Inn on Dartmoor and down to Prawle Point on the South Coast
The lanes were still quite slippery and wet in places after the rain, and the drizzle did hang on during the morning to finally give way to some sunny spells in the afternoon.
