CAMPAIGN SUCCESSFUL
Highway Code issued ... good news for cyclists.

Following a high-profile campaign by CTC, the UK's national cyclists' organisation, the Government has agreed to amend the Highway Code to improve cyclists' safety and to encourage drivers to take more care around vulnerable road users.
In total over 40 rules in the Highway Code have been changed to the benefit of cyclists and will come into effect this summer. Last year, the Department for Transport proposed a revised version of the Highway Code.
Cyclists feared that this version contained rules which would see them held partly liable if hit by a driver while not using a cycle lane or cycle track. 11,000 people contacted their MPs, 20,000 signed an online petition and a cross-party coalition in both Houses of Parliament defended cyclists' right to cycle on the road.
CTC campaigner, Richard George, said "We're delighted that the Minister has decided to make these changes to the Highway Code; it now makes clear that cyclists have every right to be on the road. Following some intensive negotiations the Department for Transport has listened to cyclists, and this new version is a definite improvement." "We'd like to thank DfT officials for listening to our concerns, the MPs and Lords who supported us in Parliament and most of all the tens of thousands of cyclists who took part, lobbied and supported us".

The North Devon anti-cyclist weapon is airborne again. 2006 was quiet but the attacks have resumed again. This time Euan Mahy from Cornwall was attacked by the buzzard in the same location as previous years. He suffered cuts and puncture wounds to the back of his head.

Euan rode through Devon last year on his End to End but had an easier passage through the county. There have been many reports of injuries to cyclists caused by what is perceived to be the same bird.
RSPB advise cyclists to avoid the area - a bit difficult if you are travelling through North Devon.

And poor weather it was!........
Congratulations to the 100's of cyclists who completed the challenge of the Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportif last Sunday.

The Ten Tors challenge was abandoned on the Sunday morning, and as 2000 youngsters were evacuated from the moor with fears of rising river levels, the hardy riders set out from Newton Abbot in teeming rain. However there was little wind, and it was fairly mild - but by Whiddon Down it was pouring down hard with reports of 36mm of rain falling quickly in some parts.

There were a few small crashes with some minor injuries, and many riders were seeking replacement brake blocks before halfway! - but by the afternoon the weather was clearing and parts of Dartmoor had dry roads with broken sunshine and a favourable breeze

Many CTC riders signed in today (12th) along with hundreds of others for the Dartmoor Classic Cyclosportif which starts tomorrow morning.
The forecast for the day is poor, but this probably won't dampen the spirits of the 1200 riders who will be braving similar weather to those on the Ten Tors
# challenge on Dartmoor.

Good luck to all riders and above all get home safely.

SAY NO! TO THE LATEST REVISION!

Cyclists may lose the "right" to ride on the road.

For some time now each time the Highway Code is revised it tends to marginalise cyclists. It may well be that the powers think that we are safer off of the road, and certainly this is something the police would want.
Already there's a growing tide of people who think and believe that we should not be using roads at all , or are not allowed to.
People are being strongly urged to sign this petition to say NO to present revisions.
Defend your right to use roads AND cycle tracks at your own discretion.

A rider in Somerset fell 40ft down a cliff face and his bike went crashing a further 300ft to the foot of the cliff at Hurlestone Point near Porlock Bay on Wednesday. He was airlifted to hospital following a joint operation by the coastguard, RAF Chivenor and Devon and Somerset fire and rescue service. Rescuers said that because of the remote location, he may never have been found if he had not had his mobile phone to call for help.

Safer to jump?
Safe lady riders are more likely to be killed!

Women cyclists are more likely to be killed by lorries than men - because the don't jump red lights!
The above statement comes from the outcome of research by "Transport for London", bsed on statistics recorded between 1999 and 2004.

It's believed that because women are more likely to wait behind the white line than men, more of them get caught in the blind spot of lorry drivers, and then get caught when the lorries pull away.

Danger lurks in the quiet country lanes.

Potholes - a matter of time?

Riders on the 50 in 4 this year encounted more huge potholes in the Devon lanes and B roads.

Some would be better described as mine-shafts! They would cause serious damage to a car never mind a bike.
Because we do much riding in quiet lanes it's likely that these holes don't get reported.
Anyone can do this, and it's probably a responsible thing to do, - you may save someone elses life.

Jon Snow - CTC President
KEEP CYCLING ON TRACK... a message from Jon Snow

Cycling and rail travel are perfect partners. The combination provides a 'doorstep-to-destination' option for longer-distance journeys which might otherwise be possible only by car. It is also a really simple way to set about tackling a whole range of problems all in one go: obesity, air pollution, congestion and climate change to name but a few!

The Government is currently working on a White Paper which will determine rail policy and spending plans for the next 30 years. It's due out in July, so the time to influence it is right now. You can automatically email your MP urging them to support cycle-rail integration using a website set up by CTC - the UK's national cyclists' organisation. Personal anecdotes about the problems (or examples of good practice) you have encountered will help them to impress on Ministers that this is an issue which really needs addressing. So I'd urge you to visit www.ctc.org.uk/cyclerail and follow the instructions from there. And do pass this message onto other cyclist friends. Remember this is a "once in 30 years" opportunity to influence Government policy on this vital issue. Please get emailing - every message counts!

Yours in cycling

The two custom built Thorn ( SJS Cycles) bikes worth well over £1000 each disappeared from a locked room at the apartment in Cannes. Bolt cutters were used to remove the individual locks on the bikes.
There were attempts to steal other bikes belonging to Gabrielle Boari but they didn't manage to cut the chains.
Unfortunately the French police showed little interest in the inicdent, as has been the experience in previous bike thefts in France.

Graham Mills - 1949-2007

CTC members have been shocked to learn of the sudden death this morning of leading Welsh cyclist and organiser Graham Mills.. Amongst other commitments, Graham was Chair of CTC Cymru, a former CTC Councillor, regular event organiser, winning rider and a local campaigner. The Vice Chair of CTC Cymru, Roy Spilsbury, had spoken to Graham just yesterday saying, “He was as buoyant as ever, busy planning and preparing for coming events including the 2008 Birthday Rides.” CTC Director Kevin Mayne said, “We will all miss Graham; his passion for cycling, especially in Wales, was infectious”. As a cycling activist Graham had few equals. His energy and enthusiasm was legendary. But it was in his ability to make friends that he excelled. As Dave Hill, editor of CTC Chester & North Wales magazine THE LINK, said within hours of receiving the news: 'I've lost my best friend and will sorely miss Graham's company. Someone so genuinely good did not deserve to die at such an early age'.

Many Devon riders will have ridden in Graham's events and been impressed by his organisational skills, and friendliness. ...... A tribute to him from Roy Spilsbury>>>...<<CLICK HERE>>

John Beesley
First potholes - now the roads are too smooth!

Whilst the local authorities continue to strive to patch all the holes in the lanes of South Devon, two Torbay CTC riders were injured on Sunday as a result of a road that was TOO SMOOTH!
A small group was returning from the ride on Dartmoor, - whilst riding along the lane to Denbury near Woodland, John Beesleys wheels went from under him, and seconds later Jackie Brodie suffered the same fate.
Both riders sustained superficial injuries, and were shocked by what happened.
Shortly after remounting, Johns bike slid again. It's unclear why this road surface is so slippery but this is the continuation of a spate of recent accidents in the area where experienced cyclists have slid off of the road for no apparent reason.

Potholes - losing the battle?

The state of the roads in the South Devon area seems to be deteriorating rapidly despite a massive amount of patching work being carried out by the local authorities.

Huge potholes as deep as 6 inches ( 150mm) deep are appearing in many lanes.
Government reponse to the CTC local campaign to get more funding for DCC
# to maintain the smaller road has been to report that Devon has had £25million capital funding, although much of this will be spent on upgrading and resurfacing roads like the A39 and A361, which are not really the type of roads that cause problems for cyclists. The priority seems to be very much towards motor traffic.

Trondheim Bicycle Lift
Trondheim Bicycle Lift

Giving cyclists a little lift?

There have been several news items in the media regarding cycling and it's development in Totnes.
The planned idea of having bicycle rickshaws in the town hasn't taken off, maybe due to the gradient of the High Street, however when a weblink showing a bicycle lift in Trondheim, Norway was sent to the press it seemed to spark of a lot of interest and some parties in the town have shown an interest in the idea.

The bicycle lift is like a moving belt at the side of the street on which you place your foot, effectively dragging you up the hill on your bike by one leg.
Whether this ever becomes a reality in South Devon remains to be seen but the idea has at least been seeded.

A promising scheme is the one to link Kingsteignton to Newton Abbot via a cycle route around the back of the racecourse which would avoid the heavily trafficked main road, and narrow bridge.
Another scheme which is being pressed for is a bridge crossing at Aller proving a walking and cycling link from Aller to Decoy, avoiding the need to go under the Penn Inn Subways, and through the narrow railway tunnel in Keyberry Road.
